In the ongoing Wimbledon 2023 tournament, 37-year-old Laura Siegemund has made history by employing tactical strategies learned from fellow German tennis player Tatjana Maria to outplay top-seeded opponents, including the Australian Open champion Madison Keys.

Siegemund's victory over Keys, achieved with a score of 6:3, 6:3, marked her advancement to the round of 16 for the first time in her career. This impressive run at Wimbledon also makes Siegemund the oldest player in the current round of 16.

Siegemund's tactics were centred around a crafty mix of slices, drop shots, and lobs, a style of play that is closely associated with Tatjana Maria, who is renowned for her tactical variety and finesse on grass courts. This approach disrupted Keys’ powerful baseline game, preventing her from finding any rhythm and frustrating her throughout the match.

Siegemund's strategic use of variety, including mixing pace and keeping Keys off balance with unexpected shots, was key to her success. Such tactics centered around using the entire court and not allowing the opponent to predict ball placement, which is characteristic of Tatjana Maria’s game and well-suited for fast grass surfaces like Wimbledon.

In the round of 16, Siegemund will face Solana Sierra, who advanced as a lucky loser into the main draw. Meanwhile, on the men's side, Jan-Lennard Struff missed out on his first Wimbledon quarterfinal as the last remaining German male tennis player, losing to tournament favourite Carlos Alcaraz from Spain. Alexander Zverev, another German player, had already crashed out in the first round of the men's competition.

Siegemund, currently ranked No. 104, has already secured 240,000 British pounds (278,000 euros) as the last remaining German singles player in the tournament. With her tactical masterclass at Wimbledon, Siegemund has joined the ranks of Billie Jean King, Virginia Wade, Martina Navratilova, Venus, and Serena Williams, becoming one of only six players in the history of professional tennis to achieve this feat at Wimbledon at the age of 37.

As Siegemund handles a busy schedule with three events at Wimbledon, including singles, she remains unfazed and determined to continue her impressive run in the tournament.

In the upcoming round of 16 at Wimbledon 2023, Laura Siegemund will employ the same tactical mix of slices, drop shots, and lobs that inspired her win over Madison Keys, as this style closely resembles that of fellow German tennis player Tatjana Maria. Regardless of her next opponent, Solana Sierra or any other challenger, Siegemund aims to continue her dominance on the grass courts of Wimbledon, drawing inspiration from her idol's tactical prowess.
