Tennis star Fabio Fognini to call it quits by the end of the year.
Fabio Fognini: A Colorful, Passionate Journey Through Tennis
Italian tennis sensation Fabio Fognini, once ranked Number 9 in the world, was recently ousted by young gun Jacob Fearnley in his swan song at the Rome Masters - his final tournament at age 37. A day prior, he had announced his retirement from professional tennis at the end of the season.
"Thanks, Rome. This journey has been delightful, but it's drawing to a close now. I'm not hanging up my racket just yet; I'll see it through till the end of the year," he mused post his 6-2, 6-3 defeat.
Quoting Seneca, Fognini said, "Everything has a beginning and an end," as he reflected on his romance with the court, partnered with former tennis player Flavia Pennetta, who famously won the US Open in 2015.
Reflecting on his career, Fognini expressed hope that spectators would remember him as the player who let his heart guide his strokes, made mistakes aplenty, but always admitted when he was wrong. Known for both his on-court genius and outbursts, Fognini was an entertainer of the highest order.
Currently ranked 107th, Fognini has claimed nine titles during his career, with his biggest triumph coming at the 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters. Although he never managed to win the Italian Open, his best performance was reaching the quarters in 2018 and dealing victory to then-world number 1 Andy Murray in 2017, branding it one of the three best moments of his career.
Before the rise of Berrettini, Sinner, and Musetti, Fognini brought a vibrant energy to Italian tennis by becoming the first Italian to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal at Roland Garros since 1998. Additionally, he guided Italy to the Davis Cup semifinals in 2014, where they faced Switzerland's Federer and Wawrinka, painting an unforgettable chapter in the tournament's history. Although he sat out the victorious campaigns of 2023 and 2024, the Davis Cup will forever hold a special place in his heart.
"The Davis Cup meant the world to me, but I'll always carry the regret that I wasn't there to help the team secure victory," he lamented.
During his career, Fognini shone brightest on clay, winning eight of his nine ATP singles titles on this surface. He left his mark on the sport, tussling with greats like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic in exhilarating encounters [1][2][3].
Fabio Fognini, renowned for his passion for tennis, has played the sport extensively, even bagging nine titles, with eight of them on clay courts. Despite retiring from professional tennis, he still relishes the thrill of the game, as witnessed in his recurrent love for tennis, particularly in the sport of tennis.
