Tennis Star Coco Gauff unexpectedly dismisses her coach days before the US Open begins
In the world of tennis, excitement is building as the US Open approaches. The tournament, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, will commence on Sunday, 24 August, and run until Sunday, 7 September.
Last week, 18-year-old Coco Gauff suffered a disappointing loss in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open, falling to Italy's Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. The young star struggled with 62 unforced errors in the match, a setback that has prompted some changes in her coaching team.
Just days before the US Open, Gauff has replaced her coach Matt Daly with biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan. MacMillan, the founder of the Sports Science Lab, specializes in sports performance, rehab, and fitness. He has previously worked with world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka, helping her to her first Grand Slam title and the world No. 1 ranking.
Gauff has also been working with J.C. Faurel in addition to Daly. MacMillan's thorough approach, which includes the use of new technology and a deep understanding of biomechanics, has been praised by ESPN's Darren Cahill.
One of the areas Gauff has been struggling with is her serve. Since her first-round defeat at Wimbledon last month, she has been working to improve this aspect of her game. MacMillan's expertise seems to have paid off, as Gauff has been reported to have made significant improvements in her serve.
The US Open will not only feature the singles bracket but also a standalone mixed-double competition, as well as qualifying rounds. For fans in the United States, ESPN will be showing every moment of the tournament live.
Last year, Gauff parted ways with former coach Brad Gilbert following a fourth-round US Open exit. Now, with a revamped coaching team, she will be aiming to make a strong return to Grand Slam competition. The 2025 US Open promises to be an exciting event, and Gauff will undoubtedly be a player to watch.
