Tennis star Alcaraz will square off against titleholder Sinner in the ATP final of Cincinnati
Defending champion Jannik Sinner's quest for a back-to-back title in the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open came to an early end on August 18, 2025, as he retired from the final against second seed Carlos Alcaraz due to illness.
Sinner, who celebrated his 24th birthday on the same day, had been in top form leading up to the final, having not dropped a set in the tournament. However, during the match, he showed signs of vulnerability and called for medical assistance. Despite his best efforts, he was unable to continue due to his condition.
Alcaraz, who has been in a rivalry with Sinner this season, winning three major finals together, seized the opportunity and claimed his first Cincinnati title. This victory also marked his sixth title of the season and his 22nd career tour-level trophy.
In the opening set, Sinner broke Atmane once to claim it at his second opportunity. Sinner surrendered just three points in his first six service games of the match, showing his dominance. However, in the second set, Atmane double faulted on the first point of the decider, and Sinner was away, powering to a 5-2 lead.
Meanwhile, in the other semi-final, Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev (6-4, 6-3). Zverev, who is diabetic, took a medical timeout during the second set due to the heat and humidity.
Sinner's goal was to be ready for the US Open, but his early retirement from the Cincinnati Open final may have an impact on his preparations. Despite this, Alcaraz is now the clear favourite to win the title in New York.
