World number one Aryna Sabalenka makes her first French Open final appearance, shocking defending champion Iga Swiatek and ending her extraordinary winning streak at Stade Roland Garros.
"It's ridiculous," said a triumphant Sabalenka, after beating the Polish player in a nerve-wracking semi-final that swung both ways. "I played like a boss in the third set." Swiatek had claimed three consecutive Paris titles, aiming to become the first player in the "Open Era" to secure four consecutive titles. Swiatek's 26-match winning streak at Roland Garros was broken by the resilient Sabalenka, although Chris Evert's record of 29 consecutive wins remains unbeaten. It was only Swiatek's third defeat in 43 career matches at the French Open.
In their 13th meeting, Sabalenka, the three-year older of the two tennis titans, clinched her fifth victory against Swiatek. They had never faced each other in a Grand Slam final before. In their only previous confrontation at the majors, Swiatek had emerged victorious in the US Open semi-final in 2022.
Under the closed roof on Court Philippe Chatrier, Sabalenka rapidly raced to a 3-0 and 4-1 lead, denying Swiatek any opportunity with her brute force, but then committed some costly errors - and Swiatek fought back. With the cheers of the predominantly supportive Polish crowd echoing, Swiatek led 5-4 after a series of breakage in a wild first set. Sabalenka responded with an impeccable display of shots in the tiebreak.
In the second set, both players struggled initially to hold their serves. Only Swiatek managed to maintain her advantage, leading 3-1. From that point on, the match quickly became a one-sided affair, with Sabalenka dominating the third set, producing a devastating 24-6 score in the deciding set.
