Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic Suffer Early Exit in US Open Mixed Doubles

Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic, who won Olympic gold in singles tennis, were eliminated in the first round of the 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles event. The pair lost to the team of Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison with a score of 4-0, 5-3[3][4].

The loss was likely influenced by the lack of extensive mixed doubles partnership experience, as Zverev and Bencic teamed up specifically for the US Open Mixed Doubles. Although both are accomplished singles players, mixed doubles requires different team dynamics and strategies, which might have contributed to their early loss.

In the absence of Zverev and Bencic, Jannik Sinner, who was originally scheduled to play in the mixed doubles event with Katerina Siniakova, withdrew due to illness.

The US Open Mixed Doubles event, held in New York, is being played with shortened sets and held in the main stadiums. A total of 16 teams are competing for the title, with eight spots filled via wildcards, a point of criticism in the new format.

The doubles event is being held mid-week before the start of the main tournament and over just two days (August 19 and 20). The prize money for the winning team has been increased to $1 million.

Despite physical issues he faced at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 event, Zverev chose not to withdraw from the US Open mixed doubles. The match against Collins and Harrison was largely one-sided, with Zverev and Bencic committing too many unforced errors. A double fault by Bencic ended the match after 41 minutes.

Zverev and Bencic, who have known each other since childhood, won the Olympic gold in 2021. However, the US Open Mixed Doubles event will be a tournament they will look to improve upon in the future.
