Alexander Zverev's Strong Showing at Cincinnati Open Marred by Physical Issues

Alexander Zverev, the world No. 3 tennis player, has made a strong showing at the Cincinnati Open, a prestigious tournament that forms part of the ATP and WTA tours. After defeating Ben Shelton 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, Zverev reached the semi-finals, where he faced Carlos Alcaraz.

However, Zverev's dominant quarterfinal win was marred by breathing problems that affected his performance in the semi-final. Despite his best efforts, he eventually lost to Alcaraz 6-4, 6-3, marking the end of his Cincinnati Open journey as a semi-finalist.

As of August 18, 2025, the 2025 US Open has not started yet, so there are no current results or matches for Zverev there. The Cincinnati Open finish, however, indicates good preparation going into the US Open, but his health status after Cincinnati will be relevant for his upcoming matches.

Meanwhile, in the WTA tournament, Ella Seidel is the last remaining German player. She made headlines with her victory over the eighth-seeded Emma Navarro in the Cincinnati tournament. The match, decided in three sets, saw Seidel come from behind to win 6:4, 1:6, 6:4.

In the third round, Seidel will face either Caty McNally or McCartney Kessler (both USA). As for Zverev, his next opponent will be Brandon Nakashima (USA). He advanced to this stage after receiving a bye in the first round and defeated Nishesh Basavareddy 6:3, 6:3 in the second. The match lasted for 66 minutes, and Zverev sealed the victory with his second match point and finished with his 12th ace.

The Cincinnati Open serves as a final tune-up for the US Open, which is set to start on August 24. Both Zverev and Seidel will be looking to carry their form into the Grand Slam event in New York.

Other notable participants in the Cincinnati tournament include top players Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. However, several German players, including Laura Siegemund, Eva Lys, and Tatjana Maria, have been eliminated from the tournament.

  • Alexander Zverev, even though he reached the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open, expressed his concerns about his physical health after experiencing breathing problems during the match.
  • I'm not sure how well Zverev will perform in the upcoming US Open, given his recent physical issues and the need for him to recover before the Grand Slam event.
