Tennis Player Zverev is in Transportation
In Paris, Alexander Zverev successfully navigated the third round of the French Open, progressing to the round of 16 for the eighth time in a row at the Grand Slam competition. The 28-year-old German overpowered Italian clay-court specialist Flavio Cobolli 6-2, 7-6 (4), 6-1.
Zverev, ranked third globally, will encounter Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor in the subsequent round. The pair had previously met in Munich, where Zverev managed to clinch the victory in a grueling three-set match.
Speaking after the victory, an elated Zverev voiced his fondness for the renowned Court Philippe-Chatrier, recalling both triumphs and setbacks that he has experienced on this very court. "I've had some of my best and worst moments in my career here," he said, adding, "Today was tough for a long time, but the second set was crucial, after that the match went my way."
Zverev stands as the clear favorite against Griekspoor, though the competition is bound to intensify following their encounter. Potential quarterfinal opponents could include Serbian record Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, while the semifinals might pit him against Italian world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who demonstrated his dominant form with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 win over Czech player Jiri Lehecka in the third round.
Meanwhile, grappling for a quarterfinal berth on Sunday will be German Daniel Altmaier, who will face American Frances Tiafoe in the evening session. Altmaier has previously reached the round of 16 at Stade Roland Garros back in 2019, an achievement that remains his biggest accomplishment at any of the four Grand Slam tournaments to date.
Zverev dominated the match against Cobolli from the start, immediately breaking the Italian's serve and responding to every challenge with exceptional play. The world No. 1 pressured Cobolli, who had triumphantly won the Hamburg tournament the week prior, with his aggressive play style, committing few mistakes and cruising to victory after 2 hours and 30 minutes.
The first set lasted just 38 minutes, with Zverev seizing victory after claiming his third set point. Though Zverev's concentration waned slightly following the initial set, Cobolli struggled to come up with answers, enabling Zverev to secure the remaining sets.
Zverev, triumphant in the third round of the French Open, will play Tallon Griekspoor in his subsequent match. Interestingly, they have previously faced each other in a challenging three-set match, with Zverev emerging victorious. Following his victory against Flavio Cobolli, Zverev expressed his affection for the Court Philippe-Chatrier, acknowledging key moments, both triumphant and difficult, that he's experienced on this court.
