French Open Showdowns: Zverev vs. The Giants
Tennis Player Zverev Faces Off Against Djokovic in Paris Match
Paris (dpa) - Alexander Zverev kicked off his French Open title bid with a swift victory against Tallon Griekspoor. In just 51 minutes, Griekspoor retired due to an abdominal injury, giving Zverev a 6:4, 3:0 lead.
Zverev's path to glory is far from easy. His quarter-final match against Novak Djokovic looms large. Djokovic dispatched Cameron Norrie 6:2, 6:3, 6:2 in the round of 16, notching up his 100th win at the Stade Roland Garros. Only Rafael Nadal, with 112 victories, has managed more wins at the French Open.
Zverev vs. Djokovic: The Battle Awaits
"It's going to be a tough fight, a hard-fought match where we both will be prepared. I can't wait for it," said Zverev about the high-stakes duel with Djokovic. The German isn't fazed by Djokovic's spotty performance this year or his occasional health issues. "Novak has 24 Grand Slam titles. He'll never be an underdog."
Following his easy win against Griekspoor, Zverev hit the practice court, then spent the rest of the day unwinding at his hotel. This is Zverev's fifth consecutive Paris quarter-final.
A Tough Road to Victory
If Zverev emerges victorious against Djokovic, he could face off against World No. 1 Jannik Sinner next.[1][2] Sinner has already secured a spot in the semifinals by beating Alexander Bublik in straight sets. Potentially, Carlos Alcaraz could be Zverev's final opponent. "I believe I have the toughest draw from here on out that you can imagine," said Zverev. "I'm ready for the battles against the big guys and will do everything to win all three matches."
Griekspoor's Frustrating Injury
Griekspoor was disappointed about the turn of events. "It all started during the warm-up this morning," reported Griekspoor, clearly upset. "This was one of the most important matches of my career on one of the most beautiful courts against a player I usually play well against."
However, Griekspoor was visibly struggling and slowing down his serve. "It's already tough to win against him when I'm fit. If I'm not, he's just too good," admitted Griekspoor. "Yeah, it helped that he couldn't serve properly," conceded Zverev.
Becker's Compassion for Griekspoor
Tennis legend Boris Becker showed sympathy for Griekspoor. "It's a tough injury because you need your abdominal muscles for every stroke. I hope he recovers soon," said Becker while commentating for Eurosport. The manner of Zverev's progress doesn't matter now. "He's already past that, he wasn't tested today, and he gets a longer afternoon to rest."
Zverev struggled initially on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, the second-largest court on the site. The German promptly lost his first service game. The Dutchman challenged Zverev early, forcing errors and making him seem displeased, and arguing with his team on the sidelines.
A Fly in the Ointment
But then Zverev regained his focus and recovered from the early 0:3 deficit. Griekspoor frequently touched his abdominal muscle during breaks. A large bandage was visible during the shirt exchange.
Zverev didn't let a minor hiccup deter him. At 2:3, 15:15, the Hamburg native swallowed a fly and had a brief coughing fit. Zverev had to halt his serve and rush to his chair for a drink of water. Upon returning to the court, he served an ace. "It doesn't taste great, but if it results in an ace, he might want to do that more often," Becker quipped during the live broadcast.

"Zverev's next challenge in tennis will be against Novak Djokovic, a formidable opponent who has shown his prowess in sports, especially tennis."
"Should Zverev manage to beat Djokovic, he might find himself facing Jannik Sinner in the semifinals, a rising talent in the world of tennis."
