Tennis player Zverev encounters elimination, while Swiatek manages to advance into the Madrid Open's semifinals.
Unfiltered, candid tale of the 2025 Madrid Open
Francisco Cerundolo, the "Warrior of the Pampas," clocked in at rank 21, claims another scalp - twice former champion Zverev. In awe-inspiring repeat performance from last year, he wages a disciplined 7-5, 6-3 victory, cementing his place in the quarter-finals.
Imbue in grit and determination, Swiatek storms through to her fifth WTA 1000 quarter-final of 2025 using her unyielding tenacity. Defeating the resilient 13th-seeded Diana Shnaider in a pulsating three-setter, Swiatek emerges victorious 6-0, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4.
The Argentinian titan Cerundolo braces for a wild-card duel against Jakub Mensik in the quarter-finals, after the Czech's seamless 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.
Zverev, left to rue his missed opportunities, conceded, "I didn't play terrible, he just played better than me." The two battled tooth and nail in the first set, with Zverev teetering on the brink of defeat, squandering two set points that ultimately sealed Cerundolo's victory.
A frustrated Zverev could only watch helplessly as the resilient 20th seed consolidated his advantage and stormed to the finish line. Cerundolo, unfazed by Zverev's outbursts, executed an elegant serve to clinch the match.
"I'm super happy because I know he loves playing here. He told me last year when I beat him," said Cerundolo with a smirk. "He's an incredible player. I have a great relationship with him, so super happy to get another win and to be in the quarter-finals again."
After a national outage caused widespread chaos on Monday, power was eventually restored at the venue on Tuesday morning, kick-starting the day's matches at midday.
Grigor Dimitrov finally closes a nail-biting 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) win over Britain's Jacob Fearnley - no easy task, considering the game resumed 27 hours after it was initially suspended, with the match suspended on Monday with 15th seed Dimitrov leading 6-4, 5-4.
"That shows you how quickly anything can change, in life as well. From one point, you're serving for the match, from the other you're about to receive, and then the lights went out," said Dimitrov, who will face luckless loser Gabriel Diallo in the fourth round.
A bold Matteo Berrettini succumbs to an abdominal injury, bowing out against Jack Draper in the opening set tiebreak. Draper gears up for a showdown with American Tommy Paul.
Sixth-seeded Alex de Minaur triumphs over Denis Shapovalov with a dominating 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) victory and sets his sights on Italian Lorenzo Musetti. De Minaur reached the milestone of 24 wins this season, tying Carlos Alcaraz for the most victories on tour in 2025.
16th seed Frances Tiafoe overwhelms Alexandre Muller 6-3, 6-3, securing a fourth-round meeting with Matteo Arnaldi, who toppled Novak Djokovic.

Meanwhile, in the women's tournament, Swiatek staves off 11 of 13 break points, gallantly battering through to a gutsy two-hour 34-minute triumph against enigmatic adversary Shnaider, advancing to a last-eight showdown with Madison Keys.
The outage proved an unexpected respite for Swiatek, who admitted she relished the downtime. "Honestly, I liked yesterday. I think the whole world was more relaxed kind of, obviously the people who didn't lose because of this. I had time to rest," said Swiatek. "Honestly, I just chilled and used the time not thinking about what I should do."
