Tennis player Zverev collaborates with a Swiss partner at the US Open in the mixed doubles event
The US Open is shaking up its mixed doubles tournament this year, attracting some of the biggest names in tennis. Top stars, who typically focus on the singles competition, are reconsidering their approach due to the tournament's new format.
In this revamped event, Italian world number one Jannik Sinner is partnering with American Emma Navarro. Veteran Venus Williams, aged 45, has also joined the fray, receiving a wildcard to play with her US colleague Reilly Opelka.
The new format has received criticism from mixed doubles specialists, but it's hard to deny the excitement it's generating. Eight teams will qualify for the tournament via the singles ranking, and eight via wildcards, ensuring a prestigious and highly competitive field.
The games will take place in the grand stadiums, and the prize money for the winning team has been increased to a million US dollars. The tournament will be held during the week before the Grand Slam tournament, with the games scheduled for August 19 and 20.
The prominent teams participating in this year's tournament include Badosa-Draper, Andreeva-Medvedev, Townsend-Shelton, and the defending champions Errani-Vavassori. Four American pairs have been highlighted, including Williams and Opelka as wild cards, as well as Jessica Pegula-Tommy Paul, Madison Keys-Frances Tiafoe, and Taylor Townsend-Ben Shelton.
Other notable pairs include Emma Navarro and Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud, Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, and Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev. Zverev and Bencic, who have known each other since they were four years old, met during his brother Mischa's training.
Novak Djokovic is also participating in the mixed doubles tournament with his Serbian compatriot Olga Danilovic. The games will be played with shortened sets, adding an extra layer of excitement to the competition.
This new mixed doubles tournament at the US Open promises to be a thrilling spectacle, bringing together some of the biggest names in tennis for a unique and highly anticipated event.
