In the heat of the ATP tournament in Cincinnati, Alexander Zverev has once again proven his resilience, advancing to the semifinals for the third consecutive year. However, his journey to this point has not been without challenges.

Zverev, who has been managing Type 1 diabetes since the age of three, experienced dizziness and shortness of breath during his match against Ben Shelton due to health issues. Despite these setbacks, he pushed through, securing his semifinal spot with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

The semifinal match will pit Zverev against Carlos Alcaraz, a formidable opponent who had previously bested Zverev at the ATP Finals in November 2024. However, Zverev has the advantage of having beaten Alcaraz four times in their previous encounters.

Zverev's victory over Shelton marked the end of Shelton's nine-match winning streak at the event. It was a hard-fought battle, but Shelton's frustration boiled over during the changeover when the score was 4-1 in the second set, leading him to throw his racket in frustration.

Despite his physical exhaustion and unwell feeling, Zverev is determined to compete effectively against Alcaraz. This semifinal match is a key step for Zverev as he aims to regain top form ahead of the US Open, also amid efforts to address his mental health and overall wellness.

Looking back, Zverev has reached consecutive ATP Masters 1000 semifinals for the first time since an ankle injury at Roland Garros in 2022. Although he has yet to win a Grand Slam title, he has been a finalist multiple times (US Open, Australian Open, French Open).

As Zverev travels to New York for the 145th edition of the US Open, he will be looking to build on his success in Cincinnati. In the past two years, he has reached the quarterfinals at the US Open. His match against Shelton in Cincinnati this year lasted for just 76 minutes, a testament to his dominance on the court.

In a remarkable turn of events, Zverev was the 2021 Cincinnati champion, and he has already defeated Ben Shelton in Cincinnati in the past. He also benefited from Shelton's 27 unforced errors during the match, a statistic that will no doubt boost his confidence heading into the US Open.

Zverev's journey to the US Open semifinals has been a testament to his resilience and determination. As he faces off against Alcaraz, he will be looking to continue his strong form and potentially claim his first Grand Slam title.
