Jannik Sinner, the reigning US Open champion and current world No. 1, has been forced to withdraw from the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship due to illness. The announcement was made less than an hour before the mixed doubles tournament was set to begin, with Sinner and his partner Katerina Siniakova's spot taken by an alternate team.

The illness struck on the eve of the Cincinnati final, where Sinner was scheduled to face Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner went 5-0 down in the first set of the final before retiring. He issued a statement saying he would definitely play singles at the US Open in New York, but expressed uncertainty about his readiness for the tournament, both physically and mentally. Sinner did not speak to journalists after the loss.

Despite the setback, Sinner remains enthusiastic about the upcoming singles tournament at the US Open. "I'm disappointed, I didn't feel great from yesterday," Sinner said on court. "But I'm looking forward to the US Open, it's a Grand Slam, it's significant for my season and my career."

The US Open Mixed Doubles Championship brings together the world's best singles players, including Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev, who will be the opponents of the replacement pair in the first round. The replacement pair, Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison, will face Bencic and Zverev in the opening round.

The main draw of the US Open in New York starts on Sunday. The US Open Mixed Doubles Championship is organized on Tuesday and Wednesday in a new shortened format.
