Tennis Player Exits US Open Mixed Doubles Event
Jannik Sinner Withdraws from U.S. Open Mixed Doubles, Advances in Singles
The U.S. Open Tennis Tournament is in full swing, and one of its most anticipated events, the reimagined mixed doubles competition, kicked off on Tuesday. However, one of the favourites for the title, Jannik Sinner, will not be participating in the mixed doubles event due to illness.
Sinner, who is the reigning champion of the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open in the men's singles, had to withdraw from the mixed doubles event after the Cincinnati Open final on August 18, 2025. In that final, he retired from the match after falling behind 5-0 to Carlos Alcaraz.
Since then, Sinner has fully recovered and showed no signs of illness in his singles opening match on August 26, 2025. He won his first-round match convincingly, dropping only four games against Vit Kopriva. The Italian star extended his hard-court Grand Slam winning streak to 22 matches, winning the match 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.
Sinner expressed that he is physically healthy and motivated to continue his bid to defend his US Open singles title. He wished Carlos Alcaraz and his team all the best for what's ahead in the season.
In the mixed doubles event, Sinner was partnered with Katerina Siniakova. However, they will no longer be participating in the tournament. Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison have replaced them in the mixed doubles draw.
Collins and Harrison will play Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev in the first round of the mixed doubles event. The main singles draw at the U.S. Open is scheduled to begin on Sunday.
Sinner plans to rest for a couple of days before getting back to work. He took to social media to apologize to his supporters for any disappointment caused by his withdrawal from the mixed doubles event. Sinner looked uncomfortable in sweltering conditions during the Cincinnati Open, and it seems that the illness may have been heat-related.
The U.S. Open mixed doubles competition features a different format compared to the singles event. It is a two-day event with 16 teams participating. The official draw and order of play for the mixed doubles event no longer includes Jannik Sinner and Katerina Siniakova.
Despite Sinner's absence in the mixed doubles event, tennis fans can still look forward to an exciting tournament as the best players in the world compete for the title. Sinner's focus remains on the singles event, and with his impressive form, he is a strong contender to defend his US Open title.
