Fresh Take:

Tennis prodigy Carlos Alcaraz is back in the game after a brief spell on the sidelines due to a couple of leg ailments. He breezed past Dusan Lajovic in the Italian Open, scoring a 6-3, 6-3 victory – a clear sign that he's on the mend!

The third-ranked Spaniard had to withdraw from the Madrid Open last month due to issues with his upper right leg, which also bugged him during the Barcelona Open final. To help him, he sported a long black brace on his right leg in the match against Lajovic.

Alcaraz beamed, "My body felt terrific! I moved superbly. I made a few solid sprints today without any discomfort. I think I aced the test today."

He added, "It was a top-notch performance, high-level play, which surprised me a bit, but I'm just really thrilled about it."

Alcaraz stormed ahead early in the match, dropped a service game when he was serving for the first set, but quickly regrouped to win it. He showcased his speed on the clay court, darting after a drop shot and responding with a backhand winner on a crucial point.

Equipped with the same number of winners as unforced errors – 24 apiece – Alcaraz is now 10-1 on clay this season. Next up for him is either 31st-seeded Alex Michelsen or Laslo Djere.

Aspiring to defend his title at the French Open, which kicks off on May 25, Alcaraz seems enthusiastic about the prestigious tournament. After a rollercoaster season so far, with a victory at the Monte Carlo Masters and an injury-marred Barcelona Open, he expresses optimism about his readiness for the French Open.

In Rome, we'll also see the return of top-ranked Jannik Sinner from a three-month doping ban. Sinner and Alcaraz are on opposite sides of the draw for this tournament. Sinner will face 99th-ranked Mariano Navone on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in the women's tournament, top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka breezed past Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 6-2. Sabalenka took over Gauff in the Madrid final last weekend.

Facing a stiff challenge from 156th-ranked Canadian qualifier Victoria Mboko, a semifinalist at the Wimbledon and U.S. Open junior tournaments in 2022, Gauff didn't give up and managed to secure a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory. The 18-year-old Mboko gave her trouble at the start, but Gauff fought back impressively.
