Carlos Alcaraz Bounces Back with Italian Open Win

Rising tennis star Carlos Alcaraz is back in the game, fresh from recovering from the muscle injuries that forced him to withdrawal from the Madrid Open. The promising young Spaniard is all set for the Italian Open, eager to renew his rivalry with Jannik Sinner.

Last month, Alcaraz struggled with an upper leg ailment that dogged him during the Barcelona Open final, and a left leg injury. However, the 19-year-old phenom is now raring to go, declaring he's "100% ready" for the tournament in Rome.

"I'm feeling fit as a fiddle," Alcaraz declared on Thursday. "I'm all charged up to kick off the tournament."

Alcaraz faces off against Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic in his opening match on Friday. Last year during his Rome debut, Alcaraz smack-dab lost to then-unranked Hungarian qualifier Fabian Marozsan in the third round. But Alcaraz bounced back in a big way, successfully claiming back-to-back Grand Slam titles at the French Open and Wimbledon.

"Last year was a bear," Alcaraz admitted, referencing the trials of the clay season. "But this time round, I'm feeling well-prepped and up for the challenge."

Alcaraz competed in Monte Carlo Masters earlier this season, where he clinched the title. He also made it to the final in Barcelona, where he went down to Holger Rune.

"I'm not fretting one bit about my performance," Alcaraz added. "I've got my sights set on making an impressive showing here in Rome."

In addition to Alcaraz, top-ranked Sinner is making his return from a three-month doping ban. Sinner and Alcaraz are in opposite halves of the draw.

"I'm chuffed to bits that Sinner's back!" Alcaraz said. "Obviously, his suspension was a tough slog, and I reckon it must have been super lengthy. It's fucking great for me, tennis, and fans alike that he's able to take part in a tournament again."

Hopefully, the third-seeded Alcaraz added, "We'll face off in the final."
