Alexander Zverev just laughed off his defeat from Taylor Fritz in Stuttgart, playing down the 3-6, 6-7 (0-7) loss. "I'm gonna win Wimbledon, no worries," joked the top German tennis player, maintaining a good-natured spirit despite the loss.
Zverev continues to seek his first grass-court tournament title, still waiting after the French Open. Meanwhile, Tatjana Maria kept an impressive momentum going before the Wimbledon championships kick off on June 30th.
Maria crowned her fantastic run in London
In the WTA-500 tournament's finals, Maria defeated American Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 6-4 - her most significant title to date. At 37, Maria became the oldest player to ever claim a WTA-500 tournament victory. Embracing her husband and coach Charles-Edouard Maria, along with their daughter Charlotte, Maria honored herself as "Queen of Queens" at the distinguished London Queen's Club.
"I loved every moment," said Maria, who had faced a losing streak before the tournament, taking time to console Anisimova: "If you like, I'll give you the bigger champagne bottle."
Anisimova acknowledged Maria's unique playing style, seeing significant potential in her unorthodox approach on grass. "I wouldn't be surprised if I see you in the Wimbledon final," she said.
Zverev jokes: "No more Fritz for a while"
Friz triumphed once again over Zverev, extending their winning record to five consecutive matches. Still appearing in good spirits at the trophy presentation, Zverev joked, "I've had enough of you. I don't want to see you for the next two or three years. Don't come to Germany!" Zverev couldn't secure the hope for the first German title winner in Stuttgart in 34 years.
Despite the rain delay and a strong 5,500 spectators, including former football national player Mats Hummels, one weakness in the first set proved costly for Zverev.
Mistakes help Fritz take the lead
The Stuttgart final between the top two seeds started evenly. However, Zverev played a role in handing the advantage to Fritz, committing two double faults and a missed volley during the service break to win the match 3-5. With the U.S. Open finalist in the lead, Zverev couldn't put pressure on him. The first set was gone.
An early second set saw Zverev struggle to hang on during his service games. The rain break at 1-1 seemed like a brief reprieve; however, after returning to the court, Zverev was unable to turn the match around. The tiebreak proved impossible for Zverev to win.
German Champions on Grass?
Michael Stich, the last German to register a win in 1991, holds the record for the longest gap between German champions. At the time, Stich was a clay-court player who conquered Wimbledon two weeks earlier. Zverev mirrors Stich's ambition, aiming to dominate Wimbledon after this year's French Open victory. However, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner pose serious competition as the number one players globally.
As he prepares for Wimbledon, Zverev made solid progress in Stuttgart before the final against Fritz. "I got everything out of the week that I wanted," he mused post-game. The latest loss to Fritz should serve as a reminder for potential improvements heading to Wimbledon.
Zverev will aim for more practice on grass at the upcoming tournament in Halle, his last final on the surface back in 2017, where he was beaten by Roger Federer. Meanwhile, Maria might have found a turning point in her season, gradually picking up wins in her stride.
