Tennis icon from France faces acrimonious conclusion
Title: Coco Gauff Overtakes Lois Boisson; French Tennis Dream Ends Briefly
Strike up the band for Coco Gauff! The American tennis sensation is back in the French Open final, sweeping past French wildcard contender Lois Boisson in their semifinal match. The 21-year-old star takes on World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday, aiming to claim her second French Open title.
Gauff's dominance was evident from the beginning, victorious over Boisson 6:1, 6:2 in just 69 minutes. Boisson, who was the first Frenchwoman since Marion Bartoli 14 years ago to reach the semifinals, showed her grit earlier in the tournament, defeating world No. 3 Jessica Pegula and Russian Mirra Andrejewa. However, against Gauff, she struggled to maintain her top-notch play. The crowd cheered for Boisson after the match, as Gauff acknowledged her raw talent and appreciated the support.
In her post-match interview, Gauff admitted, "I could hear your cheers for her, and I secretly said her name, and then my own. You would have really loved to see her win," displaying her sportsmanship and respect for her opponent.
Sabalenka, the defending champion, wore a determined look in her match against No. 1 and fellow defender Iga Swiatek. The players battled it out for almost two hours before Sabalenka snagged the victory in a tiebreak, 7:6 (7:1), 4:6, 6:0. Swiatek, who had won the French Open in the past three years, ended with a 26-match winning streak at Stade Roland Garros. This marks Sabalenka's first final appearance at Stade Roland Garros, chasing her first Grand Slam title outside of hard-court tournaments.
