The U.S. Open, the final leg of the four major tennis tournaments for the year, kicks off at Flushing Meadows on Monday. This year's tournament promises to be an exciting one, with several top-ranked players aiming to clinch the coveted title.

In the Women's Singles category, the primary favourites are world No. 1 Serena Williams and world No. 2 Angelique Kerber. Williams, who is chasing a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title, would break a tie with Steffi Graf and become the Open-era leader if she manages to win. Kerber, on the other hand, has previously defeated Williams at the Australian Open, and will be a formidable opponent.

Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain, ranked No. 3, is another strong contender. Muguruza has already stunned Serena Williams in the French Open final, and will not be intimidated by Williams' mystique. Other notable contenders include Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, and Maria Sharapova, who is away from the court due to a PED suspension.

In the Men's Singles category, the world No. 1 and No. 2, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, are expected to square off again in the U.S. Open two-week tournament. Djokovic, the defending U.S. Open champion, has won 24 of 34 career matchups against Murray. However, Murray has momentum on his side due to his recent wins, including the second Wimbledon and Olympic tournaments of his career this summer.

Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland, ranked No. 3, is a two-time Grand Slam winner and has reached the semifinal at the U.S. Open last year. Rafael Nadal, ranked No. 4, hasn't won a major since two years ago in Paris, but he is a 14-time Grand Slam winner and will be a strong competitor.

Notably absent from the tournament is Roger Federer, a five-time U.S. Open champion and winner of 17 majors, who is not participating due to a knee injury.

The U.S. Open men's final is scheduled for Sept. 11, and the tournament promises to be an exciting one with several top-ranked players vying for the title.
