Tennis Event: Swiatek Perseveres, Progresses to Round Three of Cincinnati Open 2025 Over Potapova with Ease
Iga Swiatek, the world number one tennis player, continues her impressive run at the Cincinnati Open. In her second-round match, Swiatek defeated Anastasia Potapova with a score of 6-1 6-4, a victory that took an hour and 13 minutes.
Swiatek's win extends her record-equalling streak of consecutive opening match wins at Tier 1 or WTA 1000 events. She has now equalled Monica Seles' streak of 29 consecutive opening match wins, a feat last achieved at Key Biscayne in 1990 and Rome in 2000. Swiatek's own streak began at the Miami Open in 2020 and includes victories at the French Open, US Open, and Wimbledon.
However, Swiatek faced more resistance in the second set against Potapova, with more unforced errors. Despite this, she managed to close out the match and secure her place in the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Swiatek will face Marta Kostyuk, who defeated Tatjana Maria in her Cincinnati Open match. Kostyuk's match against Maria was a swift one, lasting just 51 minutes with a score of 6-0 6-1.
Swiatek has a dominant record against Kostyuk, having won all three of their previous meetings. Kostyuk has yet to win a set against Swiatek, with the Polish player's win-loss record against Kostyuk standing at 3-0. Two of these victories came on hard courts, including their most recent encounter at the Madrid Open earlier this year.
Swiatek is aiming to reach her first final at the Cincinnati Open. The tournament is one of only two major tournaments she has played but not yet reached the final of, along with the Canadian Open. A win at the Cincinnati Open would see Swiatek join an elite group of players who have won all four major tournaments in their career.
Swiatek has also made history by reaching 372 wins at WTA level, the fewest matches taken to reach 300 wins since Serena Williams (360). With her consistent performances and impressive streak, Swiatek is undoubtedly one of the favourites to win the Cincinnati Open.
