Tennis duo Swiatek and Ruud move forward to the US Open mixed doubles semis, while Alcaraz and Djokovic are eliminated.
In the lead-up to the main singles draws at the 2025 US Open, the mixed doubles competition has been captivating spectators with its unique format and star-studded lineup.
The tournament, owned by AFP this year, has been condensed into a two-day "Fan Week" event, aiming to attract more top-ranked singles players and increase excitement and pace. The modified scoring system, featuring best-of-three sets to four games, no-ad scoring, and a Match Tiebreak to 10 points, has been well-received. However, for the final, the sets are played to six games per set with a regular tiebreak at 6-all, and a deciding Match Tiebreak if the finalists split sets.
Notable upsets have marked the competition. Medvedev and Andreeva, who previously defeated Novak Djokovic and Olga Danilovic in the first round, were ousted by Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper in the quarter-finals. Venus Williams and Reilly Opelka also fell to Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev.
In the semi-finals, Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud will face top seeds Pegula and Draper. Swiatek, who won the Cincinnati Open the day before the events in the US Open, had a tight turnaround but stated that it helped her unwind after her exertions in Cincinnati. Swiatek and Ruud have already demonstrated their form, defeating Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe, and Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti in their opening game and quarter-final clash, respectively.
Ruud expressed appreciation for Swiatek's performance despite her late arrival, praising her dedication and resilience. The pairing will undoubtedly put up a strong fight against Pegula and Draper in the semi-finals.
The US Open mixed doubles final promises to be an exciting affair, with the winning pairing pocketing a substantial $1 million prize. The competition continues to showcase the best of tennis, with its unique format and high-profile players making it a must-watch event.
