Tennis competition in China observes withdrawal by Russian participant
In the ongoing Beijing International Tournament, a surprising upset took place in the 1/8 finals. Lorenzo Musetti, the 21-year-old Italian tennis player ranked 18th in the ATP rankings, secured a victory over Karen Khachanov, a 27-year-old Russian player ranked 14th in the world.
The match, officiated by Danish referee Rasmus, began with Musetti taking a strong lead in the first set, winning it 6:3. Khachanov, however, managed to come back in the second set, winning it 6:1, making the match a thrilling contest.
Despite Khachanov's comeback, Musetti secured the victory in the third set (6:2), ensuring his place in the tournament's round of 16.
The opponent for Musetti in the next round is yet to be determined, as the match between Alcaraz and Hanfmann, two other players in the tournament, is scheduled for later on the same day.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Musetti, as he continues to make a name for himself in the world of tennis. The match duration was approximately two hours (1:56).
As for other Russian tennis players in the tournament, both Medvedev (ranked 3rd) and Rublev (ranked 6th) have advanced to the fourth round.
