Briefing: A Fashionable Showdown – Paris and Milan Make History in the Champions League

Too hot to handle: Paris Saint-Germain reaches their second Champions League final in five years

City of Joy: It's down to two giants – the style-savvy cities of Paris and Milan. On May 31, they'll both strut their stuff in Munich, ascending as more refined versions of their former selves. London will have to bide its time to see if Arsenal's run extends through two semi-final legs.

Arsenal has made immense strides under manager Mikel Arteta, and their recent defeat against Paris St-Germain (PSG), though disappointing, highlights the progress they've made. Their impressive aggressive start against PSG, the wrecking of Real Madrid, and achieving a second-place finish in the Premier League are testaments to Arteta's transformative influence. Despite finishing the season without a trophy, Arsenal has climbed out of the depths of mid-table league finishes (2017-18 to 2021-22), where they once lingered.

Wednesday's loss sealed Arsenal's fate, but this was an inexperienced team competing in their first Champions League semi-final. "Ninety-five percent of these players are playing their first semi-final," said Arteta following the match.

PSG reached their second final since 2020, making this their fourth semi-final in six seasons. Both teams have experienced ebbs and flows, learning from setbacks and evolving as they pursue the coveted Champions League. The journey to reach this stage has shown that perseverance and continued improvement are essential for success on the European stage.

PSG captain Marquinhos has long sought this trophy, having tried his luck 11 times. "The objective from the first day I was here was to work towards making history, to be the first to win this so-desired trophy," said PSG coach Luis Enrique, who celebrated his 55th birthday on the day of the match.

Arsenal displayed their intensity at the onset, possessing the ball 69% of the time in the first quarter and launching Gabriel Martinelli and Declan Rice for scoring opportunities. However, PSG was equally sharp in counter-attacks, with standout moments from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's three-touch move, and Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi's clinical finishing.

"They (PSG) won the game with their goalkeeper," said Arteta, acknowledging the importance of Gianluigi Donnarumma's numerous saves in keeping Arsenal at bay.

Arsenal's inability to capitalize on their chances in front of goal raises concerns about their survival at this level. They're short on a central striker, with Ousmane Dembélé unfit to play and a false nine in their current midfielder. The summer transfer window will provide insight into their ambitions – will they continue to push for silverware?

PSG too fought without a central attacker, but their sharpshooting fullbacks, skillful midfielders, and versatile squad demonstrated their capacity to outwit even the most formidable defenses.
