Dive into the wake of a Maritime Mishap

Welcome to the incidents section, where we discuss the unfortunate collision between a Vietnam-based fishing boat, the BV 97879 TS, and a Liberian-flagged cargo ship, the BBC Mercury. Buckle up, as we dive into the nitty-gritty details of this maritime mishap.

The incident occurred off the coast of the picturesque Côn Đảo Island. At the early, eerie hours of the 2nd of May, around 30 nautical miles northeast of the island, the Vietnamese fishing boat, captained by the experienced Trương Quang Khánh from Bình Định Province, collision-course with the seemingly careless BBC Mercury.

The impact sent the BV 97879 TS to the seafloor, while the 10 brave fishermen were left clinging to floating debris in the cold, dark sea. Remarkably, the BBC Mercury didn't seem to halt its progress and reportedly continued its journey, leaving the stranded men behind.

Receiving a distress call, the border guard dispatched a rescue vessel, BP.13.01.01, from Côn Đảo, joined by nearby fishing boats in the rescue mission. Three hours later, another pair of fishing boats, BT 93277 TS and BV 97174 TS, arrived on the scene and successfully rescued all 10 fishermen.

The border guard vessel arrived by 7:45 AM, transferring the exhausted crew for initial medical care and support on Côn Đảo. The captain stayed back on BV 97174 TS to help tow the sunken boat back to shore for repairs. Thankfully, all the crew are in stable condition.

Officials are collaborating with the boat's owner to proceed with a maritime complaint to the Vũng Tàu Port Authority and other relevant agencies. In response to the incident, the Bà Rịa-Vung Tau Military Command has been alerted to prepare for potential oil spill containment, as the area exposed to the collision may have been contaminated.
