Ten children of a Gaza doctor killed in Israeli air strike on Khan Younis
nine children of a Gaza-based pediatrician were tragically killed in an Israeli missile strike on their family home. The doctor, Alaa Al Najjar, was at her work in the Nasser Medical Complex when the attack occurred south of Khan Younis.
Graphic footage shared by the Hamas-run Palestinian Civil Defence shows at least seven small children being pulled from the rubble. The survivors, including Dr Al Najjar's husband, Hamdi Al Najjar, were transported to hospitals for treatment.
Dr Al Najjar's surviving son was also badly injured in the attack. The oldest child killed was just 12 years old. Dr Muneer Alboursh, the director general of Gaza's health ministry, expressed his condolences and concern for the ongoing violence.
Two British doctors working at Nasser Hospital described the attack as "horrific" and "unimaginable." Dr Graeme Groom shared that his last patient for the day was Dr Al Najjar's 11-year-old son, who was "seemingly much younger'" as they prepared him for surgery.
"The father was a physician at Nasser Hospital," said Dr Groom. "He had no political or military connections." The husband, who was also a doctor, was left with very severe injuries.
In a statement, Dr Victoria Rose added, "It is a particularly sad day. That is life in Gaza." The details behind the specific attack on the Al Najjar family remain unclear.
This ongoing conflict has resulted in significant humanitarian distress, with more than 53,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, killed according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry. The area has been under a severe humanitarian crisis for months, as no humanitarian aid was allowed to enter the Gaza Strip between March and May 2025, severely impacting the civilian population's access to food, medical supplies, and essential services.
Israeli military operations in response to earlier Hamas attacks continue to result in high civilian casualties, displacement, and a deteriorating humanitarian situation.
