Temporary passage out of Gaza City is initiated by Israel amidst escalating fatalities
In the last few days, the situation in Gaza has deteriorated significantly. According to Israeli estimates, approximately 400,000 people have already fled the city since August 10. This mass displacement has been met with widespread condemnation from the United Nations, aid groups, and foreign governments, who have criticized Israel's offensive.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas has claimed a devastating toll. The Palestinian death toll from the two-year conflict has surpassed 65,000. On Wednesday alone, at least 50 people were killed by Israeli strikes and gunfire across the Gaza Strip, including 39 in Gaza City. Tragically, an airstrike killed five people in a vehicle as they were leaving Gaza for the south on Tuesday.
The Rantissi children's hospital, the only specialist facility for children with cancer, kidney failure, and other life-threatening conditions in Gaza, has also been targeted. Palestine and U.N. officials state that no place is safe, including in the southern area designated by Israel as a 'humanitarian zone.' A drone attack on the hospital did not cause casualties but forced young patients and their families outside.
Israeli forces have control over Gaza City's eastern suburbs and have been pounding three areas in the southeast, north, and northwestern coastal areas of the city. The Israeli military operations are focused on getting civilians to head south, and fighting is expected to intensify over the next month or two.
However, many Palestinians are reluctant to leave Gaza City due to dangers, dire conditions, a lack of food in the southern area, and fear of permanent displacement. Israel expects around 100,000 civilians to remain in Gaza City, which could take months to capture.
Defying global criticism, Israel has stated that it would strike Hamas leaders anywhere. The Israeli military opened an additional route, Salahudin Road, for Palestinians to leave Gaza City towards the south, and has until lunchtime on Friday for them to do so. The EU has proposed sanctions against Israel, but the operation could be suspended if a ceasefire is reached with Hamas militant group.
The search results do not provide information about the mediators in the peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas that were likely stopped following the Israeli attack on Hamas politicians in Doha. The conflict continues to escalate, with no end in sight, and the international community urges both sides to find a peaceful resolution to end the suffering of the people of Gaza.
