Temperatures Soar in parts of Germany, Reaching a Sweltering 36 Degrees
On a sweltering Thursday, temperatures soared across Germany, with many locations recording preliminary high temperatures of over 36 degrees. The heatwave, while yet to be officially verified, has been a stark reminder of the rising trend of extreme heat events in the country.
In the southwestern states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, the heat was particularly intense on Tuesday and Wednesday. The weather service recorded an evening temperature of over 36 degrees in Offenbach, while in Rheinfelden (Baden-Württemberg), a preliminary value of 37.0 degrees was recorded on Wednesday.
The small town of Artern, in Thuringia, saw temperatures reach up to 36.5 degrees, and Bad Kissingen, Bavaria, recorded a high of 36.8 degrees. Huy-Pabstorf, Saxony-Anhalt, also experienced high temperatures, although the exact value needs verification. In Schlüchtern-Herolz, Hesse, temperatures also reached the same mark.
While these temperatures are high, they don't quite reach the all-time temperature record for Germany. That distinction belongs to the scorching 41.2 degrees, measured on July 25, 2019, at Lingen, a town in the state of Lower Saxony. This record was shared by the DWD weather stations Tönisvorst and Duisburg-Baerl, both in North Rhine-Westphalia.
More recently, on July 2, 2025, the town of Andernach, Rhineland-Palatinate, recorded a high of 39.3 degrees, making it the highest temperature recorded in Germany so far.
The extreme heat is consistent with broader European patterns, confirming the rising trend of heatwaves across the continent. As the mercury continues to rise, it's crucial for everyone to take precautions to stay safe and healthy in the sweltering conditions.
The weather service is closely monitoring the heatwave in Germany, especially in the southwestern states like Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, where weather-forecasting predicts another day of intense heat. With the rising trend of extreme heat events, accurate weather-forecasting is crucial for everyone to stay safe and healthy during the ongoing heatwave.
