Deckin' out its cellular network on the autobahn, Deutsche Telekom is giving its competitors Vodafone and O2 a run for their money. On Monday, the firm based in Bonn launched its first new radio mast at the A1 Schellenbach service area in Saarland, broadcasting in 2G, 4G, and 5G standards across various frequencies between 800 and 2100 megahertz.
By the end of 2024, you can expect around 400 new Telekom sites lining the autobahn. These facilities will be nestled closely to the road, ensuring excellent connections. Users should be able to download data at a speedy 200 megabits per second, twice as fast as standard requirements. Those annoying dropped connections will be a thing of the past.
Deutsche Telekom teamed up with Autobahn GmbH in May to make site searches and construction planning a breeze. Vodafone and O2 have also partnered with Autobahn GmbH, but they're not quite at Telekom's level yet. A Vodafone spokesperson confirmed that they were close to securing a deal with Autobahn GmbH. O2 is also engaged in constructive talks with the company, but they mentioned that they're already expanding their network on the autobahn without any cooperation.
The telecommunications enhancements on the autobahn utilizing 2G, 4G, and 5G standards are expected to revolutionize Internet access for travellers by the end of 2024. These new Telekom sites along the autobahn will provide download speeds that are twice as fast as the current criteria, overwhelmingly boosting consumer satisfaction.

More Details:
- Vodafone and O2, in collaboration with French operators TOTEM and Orange, are constructing a high-speed cross-border 5G network along the motorway between Metz and Saarbrücken. This shall include the installation of up to five radio towers in Germany and eight in France, featuring uninterruptible 5G technology at 3.5-3.6 GHz frequencies.
- The network aims to offer high-speed, low-latency connectivity, enabling features such as cooperative lane changes, predictive collision avoidance, and automatic traffic jam detection. It will also support advanced mobility applications like automated driving.
- This network will be accessible not just for testing, but also to all O2-Telefónica and Orange France customers with a 5G-enabled contract and device.
