Teens want to make physical education fairer with AI - Teenagers Invent AI Tool to Revolutionize Fairness in PE Grading

Five teenagers from near Bremen have created an AI-powered tool to change how physical education is graded. Called SkillFIT, the system aims to make assessments fairer by focusing on individual progress rather than rigid standards. The students recently showcased their invention at the German House during the Winter Olympics in Cortina.

The group developed SkillFIT after noticing flaws in traditional PE grading. They argue that current methods fail to recognise effort, training, or varying physical abilities. Instead of comparing students to fixed benchmarks, the tool tracks personal improvements in metrics like speed, repetitions, or endurance.

The tool is designed to assist teachers, not replace them. Only the instructor and the individual student can access the data, ensuring privacy. While no nationwide figures exist on AI-supported grading in German schools, similar digital tools have seen success elsewhere. For example, Bayern's BYLES reading screening—another individualised diagnostic system—reached 233,000 primary school pupils in 2025/2026, with reports of measurable skill improvements.

Some teachers already use simple digital systems, such as Excel-based trackers, for performance monitoring. However, no centralised records show how widely these methods are adopted across schools.

SkillFIT offers a new approach to PE grading by prioritising personal growth over fixed standards. The tool's focus on individual baselines could provide a fairer way to assess students' physical development. Its recent presentation at the Winter Olympics suggests growing interest in technology-driven solutions for education.
