Châteauroux's juvenile court found the teenager responsible for the offense and opted for a 'modified judgment' at the time of the incident.

Teenacker convicted and sentenced to eight years in penal institution for the murder of Matisse.

In the town of Châteauroux, France, a juvenile court handed down a sentence on Wednesday, May 28, to a 16-year-old Afghan migrant for the murder of 15-year-old Matisse Marchais. The accused was sentenced to eight years in prison and 15 years of socio-judicial monitoring after his release.

The fatal stabbing took place on April 27, 2024, in the Saint-Denis district of Châteauroux. The two boys were embroiled in an altercation earlier that day, which escalated when the migrant, identified as Rahman M., took a knife from home and returned to inflict multiple stab wounds on Matisse, one of which fatally penetrated his heart. Matisse was left unresponsive on the street and succumbed to his injuries at the hospital later.

During the three-day closed-door trial, the court found that Rahman M. had a "significant impairment of discernment" at the time of the crime. This factored into the reduced 15-year maximum sentence that the court ultimately handed down.

Rahman M.'s mother, a 37-year-old Afghan woman, was also implicated in the case. She is accused of striking Matisse, causing national outrage and intensifying public debate regarding France's immigration policies.

The mother, who was not identified in the court proceedings, is set to face trial before the criminal court for charges related to violence against a vulnerable person. This trial is scheduled soon.

Following the court proceedings, the accused's mother was met with a hail of insults as she left the court, necessitating police escort. Further reports claimed that she was escorted out of the court by car due to the hostile crowd.

This tragic incident has become the center of debate, with Matisse being referred to as a symbol in discussions about the consequences of France's migration policies. However, the trial did not delve into the broader social issues, focusing instead on the legal proceedings surrounding the case.
