Teen Tyler McKinlay Crowned World Sheepdog Trials Champion

The world of sheepdog trials has crowned a new young champion, as 17-year-old Tyler McKinlay from Lanark, Scotland, took the title with her dog Squiggle. This event, held every three years, brings together handlers from across the globe to celebrate the bond between shepherd and dog. Meanwhile, the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS), established in 1906, continues its mission to preserve and improve the working sheepdog.

Tyler's victory is a testament to the dedication and passion of young handlers like her. The trials, held this year in Korbach by the Schäferhundverein RSV2000 e.V., are not just about competition but also about preserving the art of working with sheepdogs. These dogs, often rough collies, are renowned for their hardiness, cleverness, agility, and the joy they bring, as famously depicted by Lassie.

The bond between shepherd and dog is a central theme in these trials. Meg Hutchinson, winner of the English National singles class 2023, emphasizes this connection, built on trust and respect. This bond is also championed by seasoned handlers like the unnamed individual who has been handling sheep for over 50 years. They see the role of sheepdog trials in improving working sheepdogs for the welfare of sheep.

Portrait photographer Millie Pilkington, known for capturing dogs, movie stars, and even the Royal Family, would find no shortage of subjects at these trials. The event attracts a diverse range of participants, from young champions like Tyler to experienced handlers and their dogs.

The World Sheepdog Trials, held every three years, serve as a reminder of the enduring bond between humans and dogs. They celebrate the hardworking collies, like Tyler's Squiggle, and the passion of handlers dedicated to improving their skills and the welfare of sheep. As Grey Owl, the 1930s eco-warrior, once inspired us, so too do these trials, highlighting the importance of respect and trust in our relationship with animals.
