The dream of staying in the Bundesliga was dashed for Holstein Kiel and VfL Bochum, with both clubs now set for a return to the 2. Bundesliga next season. Despite fighting valiantly, Kiel and Bochum could not save themselves from relegation after disappointing outcomes on the final matchday.

VfL Bochum - 1. FSV Mainz 05 1:4 (0:1)

Bochum's seventh relegation from the Bundesliga is confirmed early, as the club lost their home game against FSV Mainz 05 1:4 (0:1). Despite the efforts of Coach Dieter Hecking, Bochum couldn't reach the relegation playoff spot, finishing with 22 points. Hecking had already accepted the team's fate for the 2. Bundesliga the previous week.

Nadiem Amiri (45.+3), Phillipp Mwene (53.), Jonathan Burkardt (73.), and Paul Nebel (90.+3) scored for Mainz, who continue to be in the running for Europe. After returning to the Bundesliga in 2021, Bochum, now winless, are back in the second tier, with Gerrit Holtmann's goal (84.) making no difference.

For the injured Philipp Hofmann, who suffered a lung collapse against Heidenheim (0:0), Myron Boadu stepped into the VfL starting lineup. Almost immediately, Mainz fans celebrated. Bochum goalkeeper Timo Horn was on hand to save Burkardt's deflected shot (1.), despite loud support from the home fans, the team struggled offensively. The visitors dominated play, with Ivan Ordets (9.) clearing Mwene's header off the line in desperation. The best chance for Bochum in the first half almost amounted to an own goal by Stefan Bell (23.). The home side was increasingly pushed back, trying in vain to keep a clean sheet going into halftime. However, Amiri curled the ball beautifully into the net from 20 meters in first-half stoppage time.

Hecking made changes at halftime, and the second half started lively. Holtmann (47.) tested Rieß immediately, but Mwene scored unchallenged after a Mainz throw-in. Mainz continued to press, and Kiel fans were already singing about the 2. Bundesliga before the hour mark – but it should have been a throw-in for Bochum before that goal.

Holstein Kiel - SC Freiburg 1:2 (1:1)

Tears flow in the north: Holstein Kiel's debut Bundesliga season is over after just one year, while SC Freiburg stands on the precipice of a historic Champions League run. While the northerners must come to terms with their premature exit after a 1:2 (1:1) defeat to the Breisgauer, Schuster's surprise team of the season is on the cusp of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time ever.

Johan Manzambi (45.+2) and Lukas Höler (58.) secured the 16th league win for SCF, who could soon be facing Barcelona or Paris. Kiel still has some footballing highlights to look forward to in their final game against Borussia Dortmund before returning to the 2. Bundesliga next season.

Lastly, Kiel demonstrated particular offensive prowess. Freiburg coach Schuster demanded a hundred percent focus from his team. Accordingly, the Breisgauer started determined and scored an early lead through Ritsu Doan (3.).

Kiel fought back valiantly against the top team, demonstrating increasing physicality and self-confidence. They came close with a shot from Alexander Bernhardsson from outside the box (22.) and a header from Junior Adamu (36.), but Manzambi eventually broke through with a close-range finish after a shot from Freiburg's Matthias Ginter hit the crossbar and ricocheted off a defender.

Schuster's team continued to press in the second half and showed the efficiency of a top team. Kiel fought back bravely but to no avail.

1. FC Union Berlin - 1. FC Heidenheim 0:3 (0:1)

  1. FC Heidenheim managed to avoid direct relegation and can even aim for survival without the playoffs. With a convincing 3:0 (1:0) win over Union Berlin, the highly efficient team of coach Frank Schmidt defended 16th place ahead of Holstein Kiel and VfL Bochum, ensuring at least the playoff spot.

Adrian Beck (12., 73.) and Jan Schöppner (56.) scored the goals for the Heidenheimers. The gap to the relegation zone, currently occupied by FC St. Pauli, is two points, but the Hamburgers have a chance to secure their stay in the league in their final match against Eintracht Frankfurt. Before them, TSG Hoffenheim, not yet safe, ranks with three more points and a better goal difference than Heidenheim. Union's winning streak ended; previously unbeaten in eight games.

Both teams felt each other out for a long time, with no dangerous situations until the 12th minute. Then Schöppner managed to bring the ball in front of the Berlin goal, where Marvin Pieringer laid it off for Beck to put Heidenheimers ahead early. Union struggled to create opportunities in the opposing half, with Beck sealing the win late in the game.

Werder Bremen - RasenBallsport Leipzig 0:0

Rasenballsport Leipzig missed its opportunity to secure a spot in the Champions League prematurely. The Saxons failed to secure more than a disappointing 0:0 draw against Werder Bremen in the penultimate Bundesliga matchday, and the club now faces the prospect of being ousted from the fight for another European competition participation. Nearly four months after the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as RB football chief, Leipzig is not only set to miss the Champions League for the first time in seven years but could also face its first season without European competition since the 2016/17 Bundesliga debut season. Leipzig dropped to seventh place.

On the other hand, Werder Bremen's last faint hopes of European competition also evaporated. The sixth place, which would qualify for the Conference League, is practically out of reach for the Green-Whites, given their three-point and several-goal deficit. Werder started strongly and had their first big chance after just 180 seconds. The ball fell to Marvin Ducksch, who, however, missed from six meters and found his match in Peter Gulacsi, returning to the RB goal after his mandatory break due to a concussion.

Leipzig looked uninspired and sloppy in attack and wasted several opportunities in the opponent's half. The Löw team, missing the suspended David Raum and Kevin Kampl, failed to create a genuine scoring chance in the entire first half.

After the break, Bremen started stronger and had three big chances right away. Felix Agu blasted the ball over the bar from close range after 23 seconds, then a shot from Agu from seven meters was blocked in the nick of time. Just 30 seconds later, Gulacsi made a brilliant save against Oliver Burke, who had shot from close range.

The game in front of the 41,000 fans at the Weserstadion then became an open exchange, with Leipzig also creating chances. A curling shot from Xavi from around 20 meters hit the post (68th minute), and two minutes later, Werder keeper Michael Zetterer clawed a shot from the Dutchman out of the goalmouth. On the other side, Bremen repeatedly failed against Gulacsi.
