Team Nets concede Keon Johnson's services post-trade deal for Kobe Bufkin
Brooklyn Nets Acquire Shooting Guard Kobe Bufkin from Atlanta Hawks
The Brooklyn Nets have made a move in the NBA offseason, acquiring shooting guard Kobe Bufkin from the Atlanta Hawks in a trade deal. According to reports by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the details of the trade include the Nets sending $110,000 in cash to the Hawks.
Bufkin, a fourth-year player, is set to earn $5.4 million this season and has a $6.9 million team option for 2026-27, as per Spotrac's contract details. This move comes after the Nets waived Keon Johnson, making room for 21 players on their training camp roster and having 15 players signed to guaranteed contracts.
Johnson, a former 21st overall pick by the New York Knicks in the 2021 draft, spent last season with the Nets, appearing in 79 games (56 starts). He averaged 10.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.0 steals, and 24.4 minutes per contest.
The Nets' decision to waive Johnson was also reported by Brian Lewis of the New York Post. However, contrary to expectations, the Nets did not actually release Johnson before the 2025-26 season. Instead, there are discussions about trading him for future assets rather than cutting him. This approach suggests the Nets see potential value in Johnson and prefer to manage their roster strategically rather than releasing a guaranteed contract player.
Johnson's NBA career has seen him play for multiple teams. He was traded from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Phoenix Suns as part of a three-team deal involving Damian Lillard. Johnson then joined the Brooklyn Nets on a two-way contract in November 2023, following a stint with the Los Angeles Clippers.
In his career, Johnson has averaged 8.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 19.2 minutes per contest in 161 regular-season games (68 starts). He has shot 37.9% from the field and 32.4% from 3-point territory.
The Phoenix Suns waived Johnson in late October 2023, and he appeared in only 15 games with the Los Angeles Clippers. Johnson's journey in the NBA continues as he joins the Brooklyn Nets, adding a promising talent to their roster.
