German Grill-Werkstatt Ingolstadt Secures Vice-Champion Title at National Championship

Grill-Werkstatt Ingolstadt, a team of eight grilling enthusiasts from different regions of Germany, has made a significant impact in the world of barbecue competitions. The team recently secured the Vice-Champion title at the prestigious German Grill Championship 2022, impressing judges with their culinary skills and team spirit.

The team, comprising Lutz Brachhoff from Saxony-Anhalt, Boris Roeder (a bank board member from Frankfurt), Heiko and Sandra Meinikheim, Tobias Schmidt, Peter Dasch, Michael Bodenloher, and Benjamin Blechinger, had not grilled together as a group before the competition. However, they managed to coordinate effectively via video calls, showcasing their dedication and passion for grilling.

The competition, held at the impressive "City of Iron" Ferropolis, featured five rounds and five challenges. The beef brisket, prepared meticulously by the team, was a highlight dish that started being cooked as early as 4 a.m. Their efforts paid off, as they secured first place in the beef brisket category and also finished a close second in the overall ranking of the amateur class.

The team's victory was secured in the king discipline of the competition, the tenderest beef brisket. The evaluation process was rigorous, with five criteria being considered: visual design of the menu, degree of cooking and taste of the main component and side dish, harmony between both components, and creativity of the dish.

The menu presented by Grill-Werkstatt Ingolstadt was diverse, featuring a classic English BBQ breakfast, a vegetarian dish with kohlrabi and fennel, a three-course chicken dish with side dish, and a dessert with redcurrant and soluble coffee. Despite coming so close to the championship title, the team ended up with only 0.75 points behind the overall victory.

Heiko and Sandra Meinikheim, who own a garden furniture store, supported the team in setting up the table. The team's enthusiasm for grilling is ongoing, and they plan to keep competing. Their future plans include participating in the European Championship in Sweden or Germany in 2026, and also competing in the German Grill Mastership.
