Avangard's Struggles Continue on Power Play, Boucher Seeks Calm and Intelligent Play

In a recent match against Amur, Avangard faced a 2:1 defeat, with their power play struggles once again on display. Guy Boucher, the main coach of Avangard, attributed the team's power play woes to excess emotions and nerves.

The team had five power-play attempts in the match but failed to score. Boucher noted that in practice, the power play looks good, but mistakes occur due to high emotions and nervousness. He emphasized the importance of remaining calm and using the puck intelligently to succeed on the power play.

This period of struggle is estimated to be about a month and a half or two, according to Boucher. He mentioned that it will take a certain amount of time for the team to gel and establish chemistry and unity.

Avangard earned their first 2 points in the season from the game against Yastreb, but the quality of their power play has dropped significantly, with no power-play goals scored in the last two games. In their first game of the new KHL season against Yastreb, Avangard won with a score of 2:1.

Boucher stated that the team needs to learn to win due to 5-on-5 play before focusing on special teams. He did not mention any specific struggles with the team's power play in the game against Yastreb.

Before the match against Amur, there was a sense of nervousness among the team due to playing in front of their home fans. Boucher noted that the team moved away from their game after conceding a goal.

To address these issues, Boucher suggested that the team is still getting used to each other when playing on the power play, which leads to mistakes. He emphasized the need for the team to focus on calm and intelligent play to improve their power play performance.

Looking ahead, Avangard's next game will be on September 13 against Dinamo. The newly appointed Avangard midfielder, Ville Pokka, a highly experienced defender who has won multiple titles including the Gagarin Cup with Avangard Omsk and the 2022 world championship and Olympic gold with Finland, could increase the team's power play influence.

Guy Boucher emphasized the importance of winning games with equal lineups, not just through special teams. With Pokka's addition to the team, Avangard may be able to find the balance they need to succeed on the power play and in 5-on-5 play.
