Taylor Swift Tops Forbes' Highest-Paid Women in Music List for 2016

In a list compiled by Forbes magazine, Taylor Swift has been named the richest female musician for the year 2016. The singer earned an impressive $170 million, more than double her nearest competitor, Adele.

Adele came in second place with earnings of $80.5 million, followed closely by Rihanna with $75 million. The full list includes Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Shania Twain, and Celine Dion.

Madonna comes in third place with $76.5 million earned over the past year. Jennifer Lopez earned $39.5 million, Britney Spears earned $30.5 million, Shania Twain earned $27.5 million, and Celine Dion earned $27 million.

The earnings of these musicians were primarily from a variety of sources such as music tours, album sales, and endorsement deals. Taylor Swift's lucrative endorsement deals with Diet Coke, Apple, and shoe brand Keds contributed to her earnings, as did Adele's album sales, particularly from her latest album 25.

The success of Taylor Swift's 1989 World Tour was a major contributor to her becoming the richest female musician in 2016. The tour was the highest-grossing concert tour of 2015, generating over $250 million in revenue mostly from ticket sales. The tour's success came from multiple factors, including its global reach and the popularity of Swift's 1989 album, which sold 14 million copies worldwide.

Forbes estimated the pre-tax income of personalities from June 1, 2015, to June 1, 2016, using data from Pollstar, Nielsen, and the Recording Industry Association of America, as well as interviews with managers, lawyers, and some of the stars themselves.

Last year's number one, Katy Perry, lands in sixth place for the year, with earnings of $41 million, a significant drop from $135 million in 2015. Adele's current world tour has added to her overall earnings, and it will be interesting to see if she can close the gap with Taylor Swift in next year's list.
