Taylor Swift Regains Control of Her Early Masters

Pop sensation Taylor Swift has made a significant move in her career, purchasing the rights to her early recordings and regaining artistic and financial control over her music. The purchase, which took place in 2025, marked the end of a long-standing legal battle and a victory for Swift's personal mission to reclaim her musical legacy.

The journey began in 2019 when Scooter Braun's company acquired Big Machine Label Group, obtaining the masters of Swift's first six albums. The acquisition was a source of distress for Swift, who publicly expressed her dismay, calling it a "worst-case scenario" that affected not just her business but her artistic identity.

Swift responded by re-recording her early albums, releasing "Taylor's Version" editions to dilute the value of the original masters and assert control over her catalogue. After several years of re-recording efforts, she successfully bought back the masters from Shamrock Holdings, completing a personal mission that resonates deeply with her identity as a songwriter and performer.

The emotional moment of reuniting with her masters symbolizes not just a business transaction but a reclaiming of her story and legacy. It represents a "turning point" in her career and the music industry, as Swift now controls her narrative and can protect her artistic output.

Swift's upcoming 12th album, "The Life of a Showgirl," is set for release on Oct. 3. The songs on this album come from a "most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place." Swift hasn't mentioned any plans to release rerecorded versions of her self-titled debut album or "Reputation" at this time.

During the Eras Tour, Swift found herself "absolutely seething" when she wanted to share the news of the purchase of her masters with Travis Kelce. However, when she finally did, Kelce expressed happiness and cried, softy singing the "It's Been A Long Time Coming" intro from Swift's record-setting tour. Kelce told Swift that he believes she was destined to regain ownership of her early recordings.

This victory has inspired other artists to become more aware of their rights and ownership issues within the music industry. Swift's journey serves as a reminder that artists have the power to reclaim their work and control their narratives, setting a precedent for future generations.
