Tavira's Mayor Aids Local Residents' Requirements
In the picturesque municipality of Tavira, long-standing issues such as housing, cost of living, and dependence on tourism have been at the forefront of concerns for residents. These issues have not gone unnoticed, as Ana Martins, a candidate for the position of mayor, is determined to address them.
Ana Martins, running for office again under the Partido Socialista (PS), believes that the Algarve region, including Tavira, has unique challenges that have often been overlooked by governors. The legislative election results reflect the people's growing dissatisfaction with these issues not being adequately addressed.
To tackle the housing problem, Martins plans to launch contests for new houses and rehabilitate buildings for affordable prices for professionals. She also intends to invest almost €10 million in a unit of external consultations and diagnostic means for the health center. Furthermore, she is working on the rehabilitation of the primary school of Santa Catarina and developing a project to requalify the high-school of Tavira, which is listed among the 21 schools in the country that need urgent intervention.
In an effort to reduce economic overreliance on tourism, Martins proposes a multi-faceted approach. One key strategy is regulating rental markets with rent caps and restrictions on turning homes into short-term tourist rentals to keep housing affordable for residents. Additionally, she aims to promote coworking spaces and attract remote workers to diversify income sources away from seasonal tourism.
Leveraging the relatively affordable land and property prices in certain municipalities, Martins hopes to stimulate affordable housing development. She also supports real estate education and advisory services that prioritize sustainable investment aligned with community needs rather than purely speculative tourism-driven purchases.
The foreign community, which represents around 26% of Tavira's population, is encouraged to participate in local elections and public discussions of the regulation of municipal plans for culture, sport, environment, climate action, mobility, and other areas. A place called CLAIM has been created to support immigrants and provide them with basic information in several languages.
Ana Martins emphasizes the importance of the foreign community's participation in improving certain aspects of Tavira. She hopes that the activities related to the high-school take place in the best possible way, ensuring a brighter future for all residents of Tavira.
