Tatum O'Neal and Her Son Find Healing After Decades of Addiction Struggles

Tatum O’Neal’s long battle with addiction has shaped her life—and her family’s. Her son, Kevin McEnroe, recently shared his journey growing up with her in a deeply personal essay. Now, after years of struggle, both mother and son are working toward healing. Tatum O’Neal’s problems with drugs began in her teenage years. By 1995, her addiction had cost her custody of her children. Her son, Kevin McEnroe, later recalled a childhood marked by instability, including being sent to buy cigarettes and even offered drugs by his mother.

She had two distinct sides: one when sober, which he called 'Mom,' and another when using, which he referred to simply as 'Tatum.' The chaos of her addiction reached a breaking point in 2020 when she suffered a near-fatal overdose. The incident left her in a coma and caused a stroke, forcing her to confront her struggles.

After that crisis, McEnroe stepped in to help his mother get sober. She had confided in him about feeling suicidal, and he supported her through recovery. Since then, O’Neal has remained drug-free and continues working on her health.

In his essay Dear Tatum, McEnroe reflected on their complicated relationship. Despite the pain, he now forgives her and takes pride in being her son. His words mark a turning point for both of them.

Last year, Tatum O’Neal also faced the loss of her father, actor Ryan O’Neal, who died at 82 after a long illness. His passing added another layer to her journey toward stability. O’Neal has been sober since her overdose in 2020. Her son’s support and her own determination have kept her on track. Meanwhile, McEnroe’s essay signals a new chapter—one of understanding and reconciliation for their family.
