Tatra Mountains under extreme avalanche alert as deep snow buries trails

The Tatra Mountains are under a severe avalanche warning as deep snow and unstable conditions create extreme risks. Rescue teams have issued urgent alerts, advising only experienced climbers to attempt high-altitude routes. The situation follows heavy snowfall that has buried trails and reduced visibility across the region. Snow depths have climbed to 130 cm on Kasprowy Wierch, 88 cm in Hala Gąsienicowa, and 35 cm in Zakopane. The rapid accumulation has left snow poorly bonded on steep slopes, raising the likelihood of large or very large spontaneous avalanches. Heavy snow loading on trees at lower elevations adds another layer of danger for anyone venturing into the area.

Rescue teams, including TOPR, have stressed that the snowpack remains highly unstable. They warn that only those with proper equipment—such as crampons, ice axes, helmets, and full avalanche safety gear—should consider high-altitude climbs. Even then, conditions are described as exceptionally treacherous, with deep snow obscuring trails and poor visibility complicating navigation. Authorities have not specified how many rescue units are actively coordinating operations. However, the warnings underscore the extreme difficulty of current hiking conditions in the high-altitude zones of the Tatra Mountains.

The combination of deep snow, weak snowpack bonds, and high avalanche risk means only well-prepared mountaineers should attempt routes in the Tatra Mountains. Rescue teams continue to monitor the situation as unstable conditions persist. Hikers are urged to exercise extreme caution or avoid high-altitude areas entirely.
