Tanzania triumphed over Burkina Faso 2-0 in the inaugural match of the CHAN 2024 tournament.
The African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 kicked off with a thrilling match between Tanzania and Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on August 2, 2025.
Tanzania dominated the early exchanges, stringing more than 200 complete passes with an impressive pass accuracy of 89%. Clement Mzize and Feisal Salum both forced Burkina Faso goalkeeper Ladji Sanou into action within the first 15 minutes.
The game became a little cagy, with tackles and challenges all over the pitch. Despite this, Tanzania continued to take control, holding 65% ball possession and managing more shots (5) than their opponents.
The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 44th minute of the first half, after forward Abdul Sopu was taken down in the box by Frank Tologo. Sopu stepped up and converted the penalty, giving Tanzania a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
The first goal was assisted by midfielder Mudathir Yahya. Burkina Faso got their first shot on goal after a mistake in the hosts' defense, with Sangare pulling a low shot, but Suleiman Ali saved it.
Tanzania began the second half with the same intensity, maintaining their control of the game. Burkina Faso made three changes at half-time, introducing Patrick Malo, Yves Koutiama, and Souleymane Sangare.
Despite fleeting moments of promise from the visitors, Tanzania managed to keep them at bay. In the 71st minute, defender Mohamed Hussein sealed the victory with a powerful header, doubling Tanzania's lead and securing the 2-0 win.
Mohamed Yahya received a yellow card in the 36th minute of the first half for elbowing Bagre. Burkina Faso committed more than 10 fouls compared to Tanzania's 4, but could not capitalise on their set pieces.
In the end, Tanzania's disciplined performance and strong midfield play proved too much for Burkina Faso, securing them a well-deserved victory in their CHAN 2024 opener.
