Tanks of Israel encircle Gaza City in preparation for ground invasion, as the European Union contemplates implementing sanctions, igniting a worldwide protest
In the heart of the Middle East, the city of Gaza continues to bear the brunt of ongoing conflict. Tens of thousands of Palestinians are leaving Gaza, seeking refuge as the situation worsens.
The Israeli Defense Forces have established a new route for civilians to evacuate the city, but it is only open for 48 hours. The route comes as Israeli tanks and troops gather at the Sheikh Radwan Pond area, just north of Gaza, and additional detachments of armored vehicles are stationed along roads leading towards Israel.
The international community is expressing growing concern over the situation. On Wednesday, the foreign ministers of Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand called for an immediate end to the Israeli military operations due to worsening humanitarian conditions and the risks to hostages and civilians. The Chinese foreign ministry, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and the European Commission have also condemned the Israeli offensive in Gaza.
The Israeli military has continued strikes against 'Hamas positions' in Gaza, including a weapons production facility hit on Monday. Over the past 24 hours, Israeli air strikes and artillery fire have struck more than 150 targets throughout Gaza in support of ground forces. These actions have resulted in the tragic loss of 98 lives across Gaza.
Emergency departments in Gaza's hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties and are working with severely depleted stocks of essential medicines and supplies. The Al-Rantisi Children's Hospital in Gaza, the enclave's only specialist hospital for children, was hit three times.
Parts of Gaza have been officially declared under famine, and the United Nations has warned that Israel's assault will worsen a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. If approved by the European Union's member states, the EU's free trade agreement with Israel will be partially suspended.
An independent UN inquiry has concluded that Israel has committed genocide, a claim that Israel denies. The international community's condemnation of Israel's actions in Gaza is growing, with many calling for a swift resolution to the conflict to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
Gaza, with an estimated population of about one million inhabitants, remains on the brink of crisis, as the world watches and hopes for peace.
