Tamil Nadu urged to enforce Supreme Court orders regarding stray dogs as tensions escalate
In a surprising turn of events, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have spoken out against the Supreme Court's recent directive to remove all stray dogs from localities within Delhi-NCR within eight weeks and house them in dedicated shelters.
The Supreme Court's firm stance on the stray dog issue has been met with criticism from the Gandhi siblings, who describe it as a step back from decades of humane, science-backed policy. Rahul Gandhi termed the directive as "cruel and shortsighted," while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described the mass removal of all stray dogs to shelters within weeks as "horrendously inhumane."
The alternatives proposed by the Gandhi family focus on humane, science-backed approaches rather than blanket removals. They advocate for sterilisation, vaccination, and community care of stray dogs to effectively manage the population and ensure public safety without cruelty. They also emphasise that stray dogs are "voiceless souls," not problems to be erased, calling for compassion in handling the issue.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra believes a more humane solution can be found for managing the stray dog issue. She is opposed to the relocation of stray dog shelters within a short timeframe, stating it would result in inhumane treatment. Moreover, she has expressed opposition to the release of captured stray dogs back onto the streets, as per the Supreme Court order.
The Madras High Court has announced it will implement the Supreme Court order regarding stray dogs in Tamil Nadu. However, the Gandhi siblings' criticism of the directive has sparked a debate about the best approach to managing the stray dog population humanely and sustainably.
It is important to note that no captured stray dogs will be released back onto the streets according to the Supreme Court order. The order mandates housing captured stray dogs in dedicated civic-run shelters.
As the debate continues, one thing is clear: both the Supreme Court and the Congress leaders share a common goal - ensuring public safety and animal welfare go hand in hand. The focus should be on finding non-cruel and sustainable solutions rather than forced relocation and captivity.
