The image shows a large group of people walking down a street in front of a building with windows, pillars and arches. Some of the people are holding flags, while others are carrying bags. There is a railing along the street, and in the background there are trees, light poles, statues and a sky with clouds. This image is likely from the Helsinki Pride Parade, which has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tallinn braces for Independence Day road closures and transport delays

Tallinn is preparing for Estonian Independence Day celebrations on February 24. The event will bring road closures, transport changes, and parking adjustments across the city centre. Residents and visitors are advised to plan ahead for travel disruptions.

The celebrations begin early, with road closures in central Tallinn starting at 5 p.m. on February 23. These restrictions will remain in place until 5 p.m. the following day. The closures are necessary for the annual parade, which showcases Estonian military units and equipment, often joined by NATO allies.

Public transport will also face temporary changes. Tram routes No. 1, 3, 4, and 5 will halt operations from noon to 1:30 p.m. on February 24. Several bus routes—including No. 2, 3, 16, 21, 21B, 23, 24, 35, 40, 41, 41B, 42, 54, 67, 81, and 83—will be diverted during the same period.

Drivers are discouraged from entering the city centre due to limited parking and street access. Instead, officials recommend using Park and Ride facilities on the outskirts. Paid parking areas in Tallinn will follow standard holiday rates on February 24.

The disruptions aim to accommodate the Independence Day parade and ensure public safety. Those travelling by car or public transport should check updated schedules and consider alternative routes. The city expects large crowds for the event, with military displays highlighting Estonia's defence partnerships.
