Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel remains suspended, with 'The View' hosts staying silent following threats from the Federal Communication Commission chairman regarding his late-night program.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is taking a closer look at two popular late-night shows, 'The View' and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live,' following controversial comments made by their hosts.
According to reports, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has questioned whether 'The View' still qualifies as a bona fide news program. This uncertainty arises from concerns about the show's political bias and lack of balanced representation of political viewpoints. If the FCC determines that 'The View' is not a bona fide news program, it would be subjected to the equal opportunity rule.
Under this rule, all political candidates and their opponents would need equal time on air on the network. However, if 'The View' is considered a bona fide news program, it would be exempt from this rule. It's worth noting that most late-night shows, except for 'Saturday Night Live,' are considered bona fide news programs according to FCC case law.
Meanwhile, 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' has been suspended indefinitely by ABC following Jimmy Kimmel's controversial comments about the MAGA gang. This suspension comes after Nexstar, which operates 32 ABC affiliates, refused to air the show. The suspension has drawn criticism from many celebrities, reporters, and politicians, with California Gov. Gavin Newsom stating that Republicans are 'censoring' people in real time.
Former President Barack Obama also weighed in on the matter, describing ABC's suspension of Kimmel as 'Trump's most brazen attack on free speech yet.' Obama further stated that the Trump administration is 'threatening' media companies to silence their dissenting voices.
In response to the suspension, the hosts of 'The View' did not discuss Jimmy Kimmel's situation on Thursday and Friday. FCC chairman Brendan Carr has also threatened sanctions against ABC, stating that there would be 'additional work for the FCC ahead.'
As the FCC continues to investigate 'The View' and 'Jimmy Kimmel Live,' the future of these shows remains uncertain. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the late-night television landscape and the broader debate on free speech and media bias.
