Taliban-released elderly couple expresses desire to return to Afghanistan, attorney alleges
In a heartwarming reunion, 76-year-old Barbie Reynolds and her 80-year-old husband, Peter Reynolds, were welcomed by their daughter, Sarah Entwistle, after their release from an Afghan prison. The couple, who have dedicated their lives to Afghanistan, were held captive for several months following the Taliban's return to power in August 2021.
The Reynolds, who consider themselves Afghan citizens, have lived in the country for nearly two decades and run an organization called Rebuild. This organization facilitates education and training programmes for civilians. Their deep connection with the community and their dedication to the people of Afghanistan are well-known.
Tatyana Eatwell, a member of the Reynolds' legal team, confirmed that the couple wishes to return to Afghanistan in the future. The Taliban have never revealed the reason for the Reynolds' detention, and according to their son, Jonathan Reynolds, the couple had never heard any accusations or charges.
The British government offered to evacuate the Reynolds when the Taliban took over, but they declined, demonstrating their commitment to the country they call home. The couple was first arrested while traveling back to their home in Bamyan province.
In March, the Reynolds were moved to a maximum security prison in Kabul. Throughout their ordeal, they have conducted themselves with dignity and resilience, a testament to their strong character.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to Qatar's role in securing the Reynolds' release. The couple was taken for medical checks before traveling back to the UK. The Reynolds operated a training and education organization in Afghanistan prior to their detention by the Taliban.
The Reynolds, now back with their family, have faced numerous challenges but have remained steadfast in their love and dedication to the people of Afghanistan. Their story is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of humanitarian work.
