Musician Mick Pointer Discusses His Admiration for Tool and Danny Carey

Mick Pointer, co-founder of the bands Marillion and Arena, has expressed his admiration for the progressive metal band Tool, particularly their drummer Danny Carey. In an interview, Pointer shared his thoughts on why Tool's music, and Carey's drumming in particular, impresses him.

Pointer discovered Tool's music around 1996 or 1997 and was immediately captivated by their unique sound. He finds the band influential in progressive music, with Carey's polyrhythms standing out as "spectacular." Pointer appreciates musicians who push the boundaries of their instrument's role within their genre, and Tool's music, especially Carey's drumming, impressed him with its musicality and technical innovation.

Pointer was particularly drawn to Carey's ability to play without overplaying, describing his musicality as extraordinary. Carey's exceptional feel for odd time signatures is also noteworthy, according to Pointer. The musician's favourite Tool album is "10,000 Days," which he considers to contain fantastic music.

Pointer finds it impressive that Tool's line-up has almost never changed throughout their career, with only two bass players. He also appreciates the band's approach to their music, which he considers groundbreaking. Although some might debate whether Tool is fully progressive, Pointer considers them to touch on the prog metal area and finds their approach innovative.

Interestingly, Pointer became a fan of Tool's drummer before he had even met Carey. Unlike when he met Neil Peart, Pointer did not stand at the stage door for Carey. However, Pointer did attend a VIP concert of Tool in Zurich during their European tour.

Pointer's interaction with Rush members occurred before Fish was in the band. In 1980, he gave an early Marillion T-shirt to Rush members during a concert in Brighton. Pointer was inspired to play drums by Neil Peart, and he considers both Tool and Rush as bands that always do things differently on their merits and in their own way.

Despite his admiration for the band, Pointer has not yet had the opportunity to meet Danny Carey. However, he looks forward to the possibility of one day discussing his appreciation for the drummer's talent and the impact that Tool's music has had on progressive metal.
