Takaichi Officially Declares Run for Leadership of Liberal Democratic Party
Sanae Takaichi, a prominent right-wing politico, has officially declared her candidacy for the upcoming Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership election on October 4, 2025. The election, set to choose a successor to LDP President Shigeru Ishiba, is expected to have five candidates in total.
Takaichi, who has previously run for the LDP presidency, is expected to be a powerful contender in the race. She came top in the first watch during her previous candidacy in 2024, but ultimately lost to Shigeru Ishiba in a runoff.
The LDP election is set to officially begin on Monday, and Takaichi is scheduled to hold a press conference on Friday to announce her policy platform. In her statement, Takaichi emphasized the need for strong politics to overcome the crises facing Japan. She stated that the current political climate requires politics that can turn anxiety about the future into dreams and hopes.
Takaichi is primarily supported by conservative LDP lawmakers and supporters. If elected, she would become the first woman to lead the LDP, Japan's dominant political party.
