Taiwan Woman Detained for Daughter's Starvation Death
A woman named Jackie Chan from Taichung's Dajia District has been detained for the death of her 21-year-old daughter. The daughter, who was allegedly subjected to prolonged abuse and starvation, was found dehydrated and malnourished in a small room in their home. Neighbors were shocked to learn that the daughter had been locked in a 5-ping (16.5m2) room for an extended period. Jackie allegedly forced her daughter to quit school in 2022 and confined her to the room, confiscating her phone and forbidding her from going out. She enforced a strict study and exercise program, punishing her daughter with beatings or food deprivation if she failed to meet her standards. Prosecutors have detained Jackie for unlawful confinement, cruel treatment, and other actions causing her daughter's death. Jackie claimed she had a disagreement with her daughter, who locked her room from inside, but prosecutors believe she was mainly responsible for her daughter's death. The father, surnamed Chen, was released on bail, with prosecutors considering him an accomplice for failing to intervene despite knowing about the daughter's mistreatment. The daughter, born in 2019, spent her final years locked away and subjected to alleged abuse. The community is left shocked and saddened by the tragic circumstances surrounding her death. Jackie remains in detention, awaiting further legal proceedings.
