Taiwan forges ahead despite initial setback in Sudirman Cup

🏸 Taiwan Locked in Tight Battle Against South Korea in Sudirman Cup 2025 🇹🇼🇰🇷

The Sudirman Cup 2025 in Xiamen has been a rollercoaster ride for the Taiwanese team, who faced their first major challenge in the group stage. Defeating Canada and the Czech Republic without conceding a single game, the Taiwanese emerged as a force to reckon with. However, a tough encounter against the mighty South Koreans tested their mettle.

As of press time, the score reads 3-1 in favor of South Korea, with only the men's doubles match left to play. This tight contest has stirred excitement among the spectators, who are eagerly anticipating the final outcome.

South Korea and Taiwan, both undefeated in Group B, were in a neck-and-neck race, with Taiwan holding a slight advantage, thanks to their impressive 9-1 match record before the encounter. However, South Korea's experience and strategic prowess quickly changed the game dynamics on Xiamen Fenghuang Gymnasium's court 2.

The world No. 19 mixed doubles pair of Chen Cheng-kuan and Hsu Yin-hui, freshmen in the tournament, struggled to keep pace with Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung from South Korea, who ran away with a commanding 21-12, 21-10 victory in just 29 minutes.

In the women's singles, World No. 24 Chiu Pin-chian, who lost Taiwan's only match against Canada, squared off against the world No. 1, An Se-young. Missing the brilliant Tai Tzu-ying, Chiu fought valiantly but succumbed to An's relentless attack, falling 21-7, 21-13 in 42 minutes.

Lin Chun-yi, the world No. 17 men's singles player, kept Taiwan competitive, making Cho Geon-yeop sweat in their first game, which Lin won 21-15. In the second game, Lin ratcheted up the pressure, racing out to an 11-1 lead and ultimately clinching the game 21-10, securing his second win of the tournament.

The women's doubles pair of Hsieh Pei-shan and Hung En-tzu, who clinched Taiwan's victory against Canada, fought hard against the world No. 3 duo of Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee, taking the first game 21-17. However, they were unable to sustain their momentum, eventually losing 21-12, 21-12.

As the match progressed, Taiwan braced for their showdown against Seo Seok-woo and Kim Won-ho in the men's doubles. The stakes were high, and the pressure was palpable. The standoff was yet to be decided, adding another layer of intensity to the pivotal encounter.

In other matches, the two-time Olympic gold-medalist Wang Chi-lin and Chiu Hsiang-chieh were battling it out against Seo and Kim. The Chinese Rangers, who have won the Sudirman Cup 13 times, were currently leading Thailand 2-1.

Moving ahead, the 2023 Sudirman Cup champions, China, are set to face the winners of the South Korea vs. Taiwan match in the quarter-finals. The Japanese team, who finished as runners-up in 2015, 2019, and 2021, sailed through to the quarters in dominating fashion, defeating France 5-0. Their Group C rivals, Malaysia, also advanced with a 4-1 win over Australia. The Indonesians and the Danes booked their places in the quarter-finals by defeating India and England, respectively.
